Please don’t grow up.

In just a little over one week I’ll have a 4 year old daughter. In my eyes, she’s my baby. I call her “baby girl” and I still rock her and sing to her when she lets me. Sometimes she’ll fight it, but as soon as she’s in my arms I see that shy grin spread across her face and the twinkle in her eyes appear and I know that there’s no other place she’d rather be in that moment.

Last weekend Leila and I watched Finding Nemo while Landon took a nap. She was lounging on the couch while I sat across the room on the chaise lounge. After Nemo’s mom died in the very beginning, Leila got up off the couch and came and curled up on my lap and said, “Momma, I love you.” A myriad of emotions overcame me. Please don’t ever grow up. Please stay little and innocent and loving forever.

I love her so much it hurts. My princess.

My love for my kiddos continues to grow as they grow. I love them more with each passing day. And each age seems to get better and better, but at some point that is bound to stop, right? I wish I could freeze Leila at 3-almost-4 because I don’t see how it can get any better than this. At the same time I look forward to our friendship continuing to grow as she does. It’s just that the thought of her ever leaving me or ever disliking me in any way just breaks my heart. These are the hard parts of parenting that no one ever tells you about before you have kids.

Making Me Happy

Hello, SUMMATIME! I’m pushing aside any stress I’m holding on to (actually, I’m stomping it into the ground and then spitting on it) and I’m going to focus on a few things that are making me oh-so-happy today. None of this is to say that I don’t have some serious baggage weighing me down, it’s just because I’m trying really hard to focus on the good. And to be GRATEFUL!

>>> Long Summer Days

I love, love, LOVE the long days of summer! This may in fact be my favorite thing about summer, even topping mojitos in the sun and swimming in lakes. I love that when I put my kiddos to bed there is still light outside. I can sit on the back deck with my love and see the sunset. And unlike the winter months where I am ready for bed as soon as the kids are down, with the long daylight hours of summer I feel like I still have the whole night ahead of me to get stuff done. It’s easier to stay up later and when the alarm goes off at 6am it’s already bright and sunny out, making it not quite as painful to roll out of bed. (Shoot me when winter rolls around and it’s dark until 8am.)

>>> You Need A Budget

No, I’m not trying to tell you that you need to get your finances in order. ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m literally happy about a product/program called “You Need A Budget.” I honestly don’t know how I stumbled upon their website, but it happened at just the right time. The hubby and I have some money management issues and we’ve been meaning to get back on track for a while now. I’m happy to report that we had a business meeting the other night and budgeted out all of our expenses and came to many agreements about where we want to go financially (i.e. Andy needs to drastically reduce his monthly wine spending and I need to be banned from Target). While this doesn’t sound like a stellar Saturday night, we both went to bed feeling like a weight was lifted off our shoulders just for having the conversation. Now I’m going to give the trial version of “You Need A Budget” a try and see how we like it. Have you heard of this? What money management program do you use, if any?

>>> Coffee

My love for coffee is growing. My morning cup of joe is honestly one of my favorite moments of the day. And to me, coffee is not just something you drink, it is a moment. It’s not so much about the taste or the caffeine buzz to me. It’s the ritual of it. I always like to sit and relax when I drink my first cup (and usually my only cup) in the mornings. So, on work days I torture myself by not having a single sip until the kids are dropped off at daycare and I’m sitting at my desk going through my email. Makes being at work just a little bit brighter. And on days when I’m home, I save my early morning social media perusing until I have that hot cup of goodness with me. On another note, my addiction to Starbucks is becoming a spendy problem, so I’ll probably have to make it a once-in-a-week special treat once our new budget goes into effect (July 1st!).

>>> Hullabalu’s New Storybook App for iPad

While digital children’s books will never replace reading “the real deal” in my household, I do appreciate the many fun book apps available to my kiddos on our iPad. Our latest favorite is Pan: The Fearless Beribolt (find it in the App Store HERE). Seriously, this is the cutest and quirkiest story about a purple panda named Pandora (aka “Pan”) who lives in the clouds. The best part about this app are the graphics and interactivity! Seriously, it’s beautiful! And Leila has already spent hours (not at once, of course!) exploring and discovering the hidden interactive capabilities (like making candy fall from the sky and feeding it to the pandas who each respond with their own funny phrases). This is the first in a series of Pandora adventure storybook apps that will be released, which makes me so excited to see what’s to come! If you own an iPad and have kids, I highly recommend downloading this app for just $3.99. Cheaper than buying a new book or going to the movies and so much fun!

Even I like to play with the camera portion of the app! Attractive, I know…

Disclosure: The kind folks at Hullabalu sent me this app for free to review, but I wouldn’t write about it if I didn’t honestly love it.

Hope your week (and summer!) is off to a great start! Focus on the happy! ๐Ÿ™‚

When Life Gives You Lemons

2013_06_09_42 photo 2013_06_09_42.jpg

There really is not enough time in the day. Or maybe it’s just that I try to do more than any one person really is capable of accomplishing in one day’s time. Either way, life is full lately.

Today I found myself in a moment of confusion. I had such a lengthy to do list that I didn’t know where to begin. So what did I do? Nothing. I procrastinated. I checked facebook, instagram, email. I zoned out on a blank wall for like 5 minutes. I swear I could hear the time passing me by and feel the anxiety creeping up my throat like vomit. You ever hit a wall like that?

Instead of letting a panic attack take over, I decided to calm myself down.

Take it one second at a time. One project at a time.
Look at the big picture – does this itty bitty task really mean anything in the grand scheme of things?
Think of family. That is all that matters.
Life is too short to stress out.

And then I made a list of do-able tasks. And I chose one thing on that list, got it done, and crossed it off. And I felt better. Oh the power of good ole fashion list making.

When I got home from work my plans for continued productivity on the home front went straight out the window. Leila saw the big bowl of lemons on the table and asked, “Mommy, can we pretty PLEASE make lemonade?”

And when life gives you lemons… ย ๐Ÿ™‚

We made homemade lemonade. And then I added a couple shots of sweet tea vodka into my glass and called it a day.

Let me just tell you, my day and attitude turned right on around. And it wasn’t from the liquor (although that didn’t hurt). It was from two big, beautiful, innocent eyes looking into mine and telling me without words that life is FUN. Life is GOOD. Life is about making lemonade.

So screw stress. Screw anxiety. Screw projects that really don’t mean jack in the grand scheme of things. Instead, just try to make every second count.

Summer Fun Faves

A while ago I posted my Sunny Day Faves and now I want to share with you some of my favorite things to have for summer fun in the sun. I don’t know about you, but I love product posts. I feel like you can get a little glimpse of who a person is through the products that rock their world. Also, it’s always fun to possibly learn about something new. ๐Ÿ™‚

1)ย Stearns Puddle Jumper Deluxe Life Jacket

We just scored these awesome floaties at Costco the other day and I am so excited! My niece and nephew had them last summer and I was so impressed with how great they kept them afloat without riding up and strangling them like standard life jackets sometimes do. I remember feeling suffocated and panicky when swimming in a vest style one as a kid. These bad boys are coast guard approved, too!

2) Some Light Summer Chic Lit

There is nothing better to me than sitting out in the sun, preferably near water, reading a simple, light-hearted novel. If it has a little romance and humor in it, even better. This past winter I read The Beach Club by Elin Hilderbrand and I kept thinking how much better it would have been to read in the summer! It was an easy read that I thoroughly enjoyed. Right now I’m reading Time of My Life by Allison Winn Scotch and I’m only a few chapters in, but I LOVE. Perfect summer read. Check it out.

3) Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka + Lemonade

YUMMO! Hot weather screams for a cool drink and this concoction does NOT disappoint. We picked some of this sweet tea vodka up last weekend and have been drinking it in lemonade. Add some cute kids playing in a kiddie pool and your summer is set. ๐Ÿ˜‰

4) Good ole classic Redvines Licorice

I don’t know what it is, but I HAVE TO have chewy candy when I go to the beach. My go-to choice is Redvines. It’s funny because I hardly ever eat this stuff, but I totally crave it as soon as summer strikes. I think it’s linked to my childhood in a happy way. Yum. Now I wish I had some.

5) The Shade Shack!

Seriously, this is like the greatest invention ever. Okay, maybe not ever, but it is pretty dang sweet. We purchased this last summer for our week long trip to the lake. I wanted something to keep Landon out of the sun (he was still so little!) and I didn’t want a stupid umbrella that I had to drill into the ground. This baby pops up instantly and folds down into a little circle. It has little stakes you can use to attach it to the ground if it’s windy OR, you can just fill the little pockets on the sides with sand! So cool. It’s super light weight, too. Love it.

Have you kicked off your summer fun yet? It’s kinda funny because you think of summer being a time of slowing down and relaxing, but I’m busier than ever! Ha! At least I have my sweet tea vodka to keep me company. ๐Ÿ˜‰
